Luxury Home & Design

After vacationing on a property next door for years, these Captiva homeowners built their own perfect island retreat.

SAND CASTLE

Paradise found:
What would a Captiva Island vacation home be without lots of room to take in the views? In designing the space, the homeowners opted for spacious lanais to facilitate comfortable gatherings outside with their large family.

Keep it light:
The great room reflects the owners’ desire for a relaxed, family-friendly beachfront home, complete with casual furniture and a touch of seaside influence.

Square one:
Interior designer Susan Muller designed the room’s built-in cabinetry, which serves as a showcase for beachy art and decor.

For the birds:
A large round table provides ample seating for eight. Mixed wood and wicker lend a laidback vibe.

Riding high:
In the foyer, an antique replica horse stands tall above a painted dresser. Tongue-and-groove bead board wainscoting fits in with the home’s waterfront feel.

Chase your blues away:
An aqua and white color palette—along with ample natural light—keeps the master bedroom “light and fresh,” says Muller.

Island life:
In the kitchen, off-white hues dominate, while the finish of the cypress tongue-and-groove ceilings stays natural.

Shell out:
Fresh flowers offer a cheerily colorful accent to the rich blues of the lanai’s surroundings.
