Mr. Color comes to Estero

Carleton Varney makes an appearance for talk, book signing at Miromar Design Center on April 10.

BY April 4, 2014

“Mr. Color” returns to Miromar Design Center in Estero on April 10 for a presentation guaranteed to be as lively and engaging as the legendary designer. Carleton Varney, president of the iconic Dorothy Draper & Co., will reminisce about his design career and the host of celebrity mansions he created for the likes of John Crawford, Ethel Merman and Polly Bergen. Expect his “Once Upon a Time” seminar, at 11 a.m., to get you salivating for grand chandeliers, animal prints and lots of color–his signature.

The always dynamic designer took time from table-happing with guests at a lunch in his honor a few years ago to sit down and scribble random notes on two pages of my copy of “Mr. Color” with a self-portrait and inscription I’m still trying to decipher. It was total stream of consciousness and insight into a brilliant design mind.

Varney will sign copies of “Mr. Color” and his 30th book, “Decorating in the Grand Manor: A Design Memoir” following his talk. His new fabric collection is now available at the design center’s MP Interiors.

Tickets are $15 and benefit a good cause–the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. Purchase at MiromarDesignCenter.com.
