Hot Dish

Ready, Set, Fiesta

Cinco de Mayo, this year on Thursday, May 5, is the perfect excuse for a night (or several days!) of Mexican food and drink.

Because of this year’s timing, Cinco, Seis and Siete de Mayo are shaping up for you to get your fill of discounted margaritas and tacos all weekend long. For a más is more approach, here are the places with parties and deals that are muy caliente.

Six Bends (Fort Myers): On Thursday from 5-9 p.m., five local restaurants will bring mobile kitchens to Top Rocker Field in a pay-as-you-eat format. Organizers are also attempting to create the world’s longest taco line. If you participate as one of the 2,013 people needed, resist the urge to eat the taco you’ll hold because volunteers will collect and distribute them to emergency responders (police, firefighters, etc.).

Masa (Naples): Leave it to the D’Amico group to pull out the stops. An outdoor fiesta with a Santana cover band from 6-9 p.m. on the lawn in front of the restaurant will have food carts with savory nibbles (most under $5, including tacos, guac and Mexican corn). Then, from 9 until closing, a Latin rock party with the edgy ODAS band will take over inside with the option of ordering a $35 three-course menu.

Felipe’s (Naples): Fast-casual with a full bar, this counter-service taqueria will be rolling out a taco cart with Mexican street food on Thursday plus having a mariachi band from 5-8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday—the eating area will also be decorated with the traditional Papel Picado (authentic paper banners).

Los Cabos (Fort Myers): Edging out Felipe’s slightly in the still-going-strong department, there will be not three but four days of $20 margarita pitchers and $5 shots of tequila, plus parties overlapping with Friday’s ArtWalk and an outdoor concert Saturday in the courtyard.

Agave (Naples): From 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, there will be hourly giveaways of the house-label Herradura tequila that’s 100 percent blue agave and even more will be raffled off all day long. A five-piece band will also play at night.

Cancun Bar & Grill (Estero): If reliving collegiate Spring Break-y days is your jam, check out the parking lot party here from 2-8 p.m. featuring $2 margaritas and DJ Pete Broward.
