Don’t Let Your Partner Cause the ‘Ripple Effect’

How your spouse may hinder your weight-loss routine.

While you’re finishing your kale salad, you notice your spouse brings in a big bowl of ice cream from the kitchen. Should you get mad? We say you have a right to. The reason: the ripple effect. Further explored in a study in Obesity, the ripple effect is how your partner’s action may help or hinder your own workout or weight-loss routine. The study found that participants whose partners also engaged in weight-loss efforts dropped about 3 percent more than those with partners who didn’t join in. It doesn’t matter if it’s a formal program like Weight Watchers or not; just having someone go through what you’re going through is good enough.
