Binge Drinking on the Rise

Americans are drinking more than ever.

BY August 31, 2017

Maybe hold off on that glass of wine tonight. Turns out we’re drinking a lot more than what we should.

A study in JAMA Psychiatry reported that about 30 million adults are high-risk or binge drinkers (about five drinks for a man or four for a woman in one sitting). That was an increase of about 30 percent since the survey was last taken about 15 years ago.

Adults are mostly driving the surge, particularly minorities and lower-income Americans. The reasons are varied, according to the study, including the fact that stress has been high since the great recession.

No matter the cause, high drinking rates are bound to have significant effects on the nation’s health in the long run.
