Don’t Let Anxiety Keep You Up

Tips for getting a good night’s rest

BY August 22, 2017

Millions of Americans have trouble sleeping, and one of the biggest reasons is anxiety. Most of us have some form of anxiety in our lives—but you don’t have to let it ruin your night. Harvard’s HealthBeat has come up with some simple tips to keep your anxiety at bay as you look to wind down your day:

– Set a limit on your tossing and turning. If you’re still wide awake after 20 minutes, get out of bed and try something to distract your mind (like reading) before setting down again.

–  Cut off your caffeine early. Caffeine can take up to eight hours to wear off. Part of that antsiness you may be feeling may come from that Coke you had at dinner.

– Turn your bedroom into an environment for sleeping. Think cool, dark and no screens that can light up.

– Create a relaxing bedtime routine by setting aside time to read, listen to soothing music or take a hot bath (or all three).
