Study: Ultra-processed foods linked to increased risk of cancer

BY February 15, 2018

Too many servings of chicken nuggets, soda, snack cakes and other highly processed foods may raise your risk of getting cancer, according to a study in BMI. We already know so-called ultra-processed foods are, in general, bad for your health, but this is the first study to link them to an increase in cancer.

The study is largely based on correlations, but the results were significant enough to raise red flags about the connection between processed foods and cancer. It found that a 10 percent increase in ultra-processed foods led to about a 12 percent increased risk of cancer.

Of note: Americans get more than half of their daily calories from highly processed foods.
