Just about one in four deaths in the United States happen because of heart disease. It’s a widespread killer that’s difficult to defeat. But, if you take the right steps, you can do your best to avoid it.

The Mayo Clinic reports that these seven steps can significantly reduce your risk for heart disease.

1. Quit smoking.

2. Exercise for 30 minutes each day. It can even be moderate exercise like walking.

3. Start eating right. The DASH Diet is a good one to follow.

4. Maintain a healthy weight. Keep your BMI lower than 25.

5. Sleep well.

6. Reduce stress.

7. Get regular checkups. This means checking cholesterol and blood pressure and getting diabetes screenings.
