Southwest Florida is no longer just a retirement and tourist destination. In recent years, a more diverse and vibrant economy has developed, in part aided by a steadily growing population.

This was reflected once again this week in a report by the Milken Institute, which placed the Naples metropolitan area 18th nationwide in a study of best-performing cities. The study looks at job growth, wages and a host of other economic data. Naples ranked fourth in the country when it came to job growth over the last five years. (Read the full report here.)

Cape Coral-Fort Myers came in at 30th on the list and the Sarasota area ranked sixth. The Gulfshore from Tampa on south to Naples has been prime for business development. We explored this topic in our December issue, in particular how Southwest Florida has become prime for young entrepreneurs. (Read the full story here.)
