City Of Palms No More? Say It Ain’t So

City of Fort Myers considers changing its nickname

BY July 14, 2016

Update 7/15/16: The City of Palms is here to stay. The News-Press reports the nickname isn't going anywhere. According to our unofficial survey, that's the right move. About 85 percent of voters said to stick with "City of Palms." A distant second was "Sunny Days and Warm Ways." And then there was the voter who wrote in a new slogan: "The Midwest, Only Warmer."

Is it time to ditch the City of Palms? How does the City of Warm Welcomes sound instead?

Seeing how rebranding is all the rage these days, the City of Fort Myers is rethinking how it wants to present itself to the world (all to the tune of $100,000 or so). The proposed move that’s generated the most controversy is the change to the nickname that’s been around for almost 100 years.

Residents got a survey sent to them to weigh in on the possibilities, and the suggested new slogans were, um, interesting, to say the least. Get Real Florida makes sense if you add a comma—Get Real, Florida. Sunny Days and Warm Ways would work—if this were Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Our suggestion: Just add a word to reflect the city’s reliance on the almighty tourist dollar—City of Palms Out.

So, what do you think? Vote in our poll of the suggested names below.
