The Ice Bucket Challenge Actually Paid Off

ALS Association announces discovery of gene linked to disease

BY July 28, 2016

Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge? We certainly do.

Turns out, all that water was worth it. The ALS Association announced recently the discovery of NEK1, a gene that contributes to Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The discovery can help researchers study how the disease takes hold and may eventually lead to treatments.

When all was said and done (and dried), the challenge raised about $115 million for the association. Close to 90 percent went to patient services and research endeavors.

Now, one last time, let’s enjoy celebrities getting soaked.
