Are Build-Your-Own Babies the Future of Fertility?

A Stanford professor explains in ‘The End of Sex and the Future of Human Reproduction.’

In 20 to 30 years, the method of creating new life may be simplified to nothing more than a genetic checklist and some skin samples.

Stanford professor Henry Greely—author of The End of Sex and the Future of Human Reproduction—believes that sex to procreate will be null in a few decades.

The current genetic screening process already allows for embryotic scanning for genetic defects and mutations. However, the next step will go beyond screening. A skin sample from biologically female skin will be used to create stem cells, which in turn creates eggs. These eggs are then fertilized with sperm cells and the result is new life.

While there are some ethical and lawful implications of this process, it could help thousands of want-to-be parents with fertility issues.
