Exercise May Help Strengthen Memory

The key to acing those midterms may have been something other than a late-night cram session.

A study in Current Biology tested a premise that exercise may help short-term memory. The results were a little surprising. The researchers told participants to study an arrangement of pictures and recall them later. Those who just sat around or did exercise immediately after didn’t show any signs of a memory boost. However, those who worked out hours after looking at the pictures ended up remembering them better.

The results suggest there could be some benefit to short-term memory by working out later in the day, but more study is needed before anyone can come to any immediate conclusions.

However, it is progress in the theory that exercise benefits both body and mind
