Fewer Overweight Americans Trying to Lose Weight

Study showed an uptick in the number of people who’ve given up

Double bad news: The number of overweight Americans has gone up over the last 30 years. And, many of them have given up trying to lose weight.

A study published in JAMA studied data from 1988 about Americans and weight gain. About two-thirds of the population is overweight or obese, compared to about 53 percent in 1988. The number of people saying they’re trying to lose weight went from 56 percent to 49 percent.

Respondents didn’t explain why, but researchers point out the difficulties of not just losing weight but keeping it off.

"It's hard to drop pounds," Zhang said told Reuters. "It's a lifelong commitment and painful, and many of us have tried and failed, tried and failed, and finally failed to try anymore."
