It wasn't always the case, but the gulfshore now affords shoppers a full range of options. Three outlet centers-Miromar in Estero, Tanger Factory in south Fort Myers and Prime Outlets in Naples-offer plenty of territory for bargain hunters. Naples' Coastland Center and Edison Mall in Fort Myers are vast complexes with most major chains represented. Flea market devotees can choose from at least five such establishments, including the new indoor Fleamasters in North Fort Myers. For those seeking something unique, boutique shopping abounds at Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers, The Promenade in Bonita Springs, Third Street South and Fifth Avenue South in Old Naples, and at any number of unassuming strip centers along Sanibel Island's Periwinkle Way. When name and service count, Saks and Jacobson's have stores in Fort Myers and Naples, with other upscale retailers nestled close by. BONITA SPRINGS The Center of Bonita Springs is located at the northwest corner of U.S. 41 and Bonita Beach Road. It offers two department stores, 50 specialty shops and boutiques and several restaurants. (941) 498-4453. Flamingo Island Flea Market, 11902 Bonita Beach Road, features a variety of booths offering everything from produce and clothing to framed art and novelty items. (941) 948-7799. Springs Plaza, at the southeast corner of U.S. 41 and Bonita Beach Road, is an open-air complex with a department store outlet, specialty shops and boutiques, restaurants and a 24-hour grocery store. The Promenade at Bonita Bay, fronting U.S. 41, is a courtyard-shopping village that includes 30 upscale retail shops, galleries, restaurants as well as offices. CAPE CORAL Coralwood Mall, 2301 Del Prado Blvd., is an open-air mall with three national retailers, a grocery store and a number of specialty stores, as well as a restaurant. CAPTIVA ISLAND Chadwick's Square, located at the entrance to South Seas Plantation on the north end of Captiva Island, features a pizzeria, gallery, jeweler, clothing shops and groceries. (941) 472-5111. FORT MYERS Downtown Fort Myers is experiencing a resurgence of retail and commercial development. Since March 1998, a total of 25 new retail or service businesses have hung out their shingles and 10 new restaurants and clubs have opened their doors to eager patrons. Several more clubs and restaurants opened in the summer of 1999. McGregor Boulevard, just east of College Parkway, is home to more than a dozen antique stores within a small area. Several specialize in particular items and refer customers to each store. Bell Tower Shops, corner of U.S. 41 and Daniels Parkway an outdoor mall anchored by Jacobson's and Saks Fifth Avenue. Colonial Crossing, 45805 Summerlin Road, includes a grocery store, restaurants and specialty and service shops. Cypress Square, corner of McGregor Boulevard and Cypress Lake Drive, is an open-air center with walkways that wind past specialty boutiques, restaurants, retail outlets and professional offices. Daniels Crossing, 6900 Daniels Parkway, is anchored by a grocery store, a large craft-supply store, retail stores, service-related companies, restaurants and two banks. Design Center, 13241 McGregor Blvd., features restaurants, boutiques, a gallery and a jewelry store. Edison Mall, corner of U.S. 41 and Colonial Boulevard, features more than 1 million square feet of retail space, with five major department store anchors and 150 stores featuring many of the nation's top retailers, such as The Disney Store, Victoria's Secret and The Body Shop. Fleamasters Flea Market, 4135 Martin Luther King Drive, offers more than 800 booths filled with just about every imaginable product. Miromar Outlets, located between Naples and Fort Myers at I-75 and Corkscrew Road, is simply world-class. With more than 50 leading designer manufacturers and famous brand labels at factory outlet prices, Miromar offers an inviting Mediterranean atmosphere of open-air walkways, piazzas, sculpted water fountains and an array of trendy restaurants in the unique Blue Heron Café. Royal Palm Square, corner of Colonial Boulevard and Summerlin Road, is an outdoor mall with a pond surrounded by lush vegetation. Anchored by the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, the mall features specialty stores, service companies, restaurants and professional offices. (941) 939-3900. Tanger Factory Stores, corner of McGregor Boulevard and Summerlin Road on the way to Sanibel, is an outlet mall featuring dozens of the nation's leading manufacturers, ranging from designer goods to seconds. (941) 454-1616. FORT MYERS BEACH Times Square, at the foot of the Matanzas Pass Sky Bridge, is the beach's historic downtown area. A $2.3-million streetscape project has created a pedestrian mall next to the pier and Lynn Hall Memorial Park, a county facility. Included are outdoor dining facilities, an ice cream shop, and watersport vendors, surf shops and many other beach- related items in this charming area. Seafarer's Village Shopping Mall, 1113 Estero Blvd., is located at the foot of the Sky Bridge. The beach's only indoor mall, Seafarer's boasts 16 specialty shops, offering shells, T-shirts, imported clothing, health food, hats and gifts, plus a German restaurant. (941) 463-1113. Key Estero Shopping Plaza, 1661 Estero Blvd., is a center with restaurants, shops, a gallery, medical offices, service companies and a post office. MARCO ISLAND Island Plaza, corner of North Collier Boulevard and Bald Eagle Drive, features a dozen shops with items ranging from souvenirs to surfing gear, plus two restaurants and a grocery store. Marco Town Center Mall, corner of North Collier Boulevard and Bald Eagle Drive, is Marco's first and largest shopping center. It features more than 40 shops and restaurants. Mission Plaza, on South Collier Boulevard, offers an open-air setting that features five restaurants and two dozen stores, offering an eclectic assortment of merchandise, including clothing, jewelry, toys and sporting goods. Pelican Plaza, located on Bald Eagle Drive, offers an assortment of items ranging from island-style clothing and sportswear to crafts and gourmet food. Port of Marco Shopping Village, on Royal Palm Drive, is a village setting with a large selection of clothing and souvenirs, as well as jewelry, homemade ice cream and candy. The Shops of Marco, corner of San Marco Road and Barfield Drive, features a wide variety of clothing stores, plus homemade treats, unique gifts and an assortment of restaurants. NAPLES The Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) boasts shopping centers such as Neapolitan Way, Parkshore Centre and The Pavilion on the North Trail. The East Trail offers Naples Town Centre among others. These retail complexes have something for everyone, including food, pharmaceuticals, clothing, appliances, amusement, sporting goods and more. Bayfront, corner of U.S. 41 and Good-lette Road on Naples Bay, is Naples' newest fine shopping and dining waterfront destination.(941)649-8700. Coastland Center, 1900 N. Coconut Grove Market Place & Marina, 220 Fourth Ave. S., is a waterfront center with galleries, gift shops, specialty boutiques, a marina and a restaurant overlooking the water. Dockside Boardwalk, 1100 Sixth Ave. S., has unique gifts, artwork, fine apparel and restaurants along its boardwalk overlooking Naples Bay. Fifth Avenue South, the premier Naples venue, is six blocks of tree-lined streets in Old Naples, offering a heady mix of sophisticated restaurants and discriminating boutiques that appeal to European and American sensibilities. The Plaza, corner of Gulf Shore Boulevard and Broad Avenue, was once the site of Naples' first hotel. Now the contemporary building is home to more than 20 boutiques. Prime Outlets at Naples, on Route 951 en route to Marco Island, is a manufacturer's outlet center with more than 40 shops, offering value pricing on men's and women's fashions to housewares and accessories. The Shops at Eagle Creek, corner of U.S. 41 and Route 951, is a shopping center with an abundance of well-known retailers, offering everything from office supplies to appliances, food and clothing. Third Street South and The Avenues, located in the heart of Old Naples, features a collection of more than 100 funky and elegant shops, offering fine clothing, jewelry, artwork, collectibles and home furnishings. The Village on Venetian Bay, at the corner of Gulf Shore Boulevard and Park Shore Drive, is a waterfront village with a taste of old Italy. Enjoy more than 50 upscale specialty boutiques, galleries, design studios, five waterfront restaurants providing fine and casual dining and even a Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop. Waterside Shops at Pelican Bay, off U.S. 41 next to the Philharmonic Center for the Arts, is a high-end, outdoor mall with Jacobson's and Saks Fifth Avenue, plus more than 50 specialty shops and restaurants. (941) 598-1605. NORTH FORT MYERS Merchant's Crossing, 15201 N. Cleveland Ave. (U.S. 41), features superstores of large national retailers for home improvements and discount household items and clothing. There is also a 16-screen movie complex. Assistance for those in wheelchairs is available. The Shell Factory, four miles north of Fort Myers on U.S. 41, boasts the largest collection of shells in the world within 65,000 square feet of retail space. SANIBEL ISLAND Periwinkle Way, Sanibel's main road, features numerous open-air malls, each with a unique personality. From seashells to souvenirs and clothing to crafts, there is something for every taste at the larger plazas: Village Shopping Center, Tahitian Gardens, Periwinkle Place and Islander Center. Bailey's Center, corner of Periwinkle Way and Tarpon Bay Road, is the island's first shopping center and still run by Sanibel pioneers.
