Lullabies with Lanny

By: Bob Morris

Here's an invitation that Lanny Sherwin, the founding editor of Gulfshore Life, hopes you won't refuse. Slip into cozy pajamas, snuggle under the covers and settle in for some lullabies with "Dream With Me Tonight," Sherwin's recently released children's CD.

"Many people think lullabies are the same old, same old," says Sherwin, a former Naples resident who now calls Tennessee home. That's why this songwriting dad created a compilation of anything-but-ordinary songs that will lull children and soothe parents.

Sherwin's inspiration: his 4-year-old son Alec. Existing lullaby CDs may have entertained Alec, but after 200 repetitive plays, Dad was on the edge of insanity.

"I wanted to write something for a child, but I also wanted it to be a real song," he says. He came up with 15 original songs that he promises "you can play over and over again."

The outcome, sleeping children and grateful parents, is thrilling and satisfying for Sherwin, who moved to Nashville from Naples in 1993 seeking songwriting stardom.

"I was chasing the commercial country brass ring," he says. "With this, I can say I created it totally on my own and found the music I wanted. And I expect to produce more."

Recording artist Melodie Crittenden lends her voice on 10 songs, including "Too Many Animals," "Goodnight, Nightlight" and "Angels." Bob Patin and Bryan Cumming showcase their instrumental talents on "Stars are Wishes" and "Moondreams."

To make the package complete, Sherwin teamed up with Theo Rudnak, former Gulfshore Life art director, to design an inspirational CD cover featuring cozy nighttime friends.

Just named Best Toddler CD on a well-regarded children's Web site, "Dream With Me Tonight" is available nationwide.
