Lively Ghost Tours in Fort Myers Beach

Estero Boulevard's sprawl of beachfront commerce notwithstanding, the island's a ghost town, at least according to Lois Iannucci, co-founder of Ghost Tours of Fort Myers.

Dressed in a flowing black dress and matching hat, she leads lantern-lit walking tours along Fort Myers Beach's main thoroughfare each night. As she carefully makes her way through the modern-day throngs of lobster-hued tourists and partying teens, she regales participants with juicy tidbits of the region's past: spirits who remain from the time when the Calusas were the only inhabitants; the beautiful young woman said to roam the beach in a graceful blue gown; poltergeists on Cabbage Key, and a woman and her beloved dog who haunt the Beached Whale.

The stories aren't mere figments of Iannucci's imagination. She and her mother, Barbara, spent months interviewing locals, getting firsthand accounts whenever possible from those who claim to have seen the ghosts. Iannucci continues her research in order to add ever more spirited tales. Her Web site-www.hauntedfortmyers.com-even lets visitors submit their supernatural experiences.

Despite the subject matter, the tours aren't designed to make believers out of the skeptical. Blending humor and history, Iannucci aims to offer an after-dinner family activity.

"I'm not trying to change anyone's mind," she says. "I just report what's been seen. I'm a storyteller, not an historian."
