Another opening, another show ... yep, that's right: Kiss me, Kate, that quintessential show business show, is coming to town this month, and not in just one area theater, but two.
The Naples Players offer the Cole Porter hit about backstage feuding and romance during a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew Feb. 27-March 29, as part of its 50th anniversary season. "It played during the '50s, the same time as our theater was getting started, so it seemed like a good idea," says artistic director Dallas Dunnagan, who's directing the show. She'll start with the original script by Sam and Bella Spewack, and, prior to casting, wasn't sure whether she'd incorporate any of the changes recent revivals have made, such as moving a song's spot in the production here and there. She's working with husband-and-wife team Karen Molnar Danni (who did the choreography for the Players' Oklahoma! and Sweet Charity) and Mark Danni (handling musical direction) on this one.
Meanwhile, in Fort Myers, the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is concocting its own production of the popular show, to run Feb. 27-April 12. And director-choreographer Millie Garvey will take her cue somewhat from the recent Broadway revival, offering a more natural, realistic approach in the acting style of the tempestuous lovers, "in keeping with the way relationships are today," she says. Paul Gregory Nelson (familiar from The Music Man and Evita in earlier Palm productions) and Adriana Lomysh star as the theatrical pair who just can't stay apart in this one.
