Jim McLaughlin

In a profession where "Amarillo today, Anchorage tomorrow" is the norm, WINK-TV anchorman and managing editor Jim McLaughlin's 26-year career at the station speaks volumes about his respect for the organization. A mentor to many younger broadcasters, the 59-year-old McLaughlin, often accompanied by his on-air partner of 12 years, Lois Thome, hosts numerous community events, including the region's two annual Golden Apple Teacher Recognition dinners.

Birthplace: Oneida, N. Y.

Most notable characteristic: My willingness to share what I know with others.

Greatest achievement: Making something of myself after a rocky start. I owe a great deal to a great many people who have had almost blind faith in me. I try to repay them by doing the best job I can.

Most-admired trait: The ability to love someone in spite of their faults.

Favorite Southwest Florida spot: For living, Bokeelia; for spending time in our motor home, my wife (Marty) and I enjoy Red Coconut RV Park on Fort Myers Beach.

People would be surprised to learn: About my battle against alcoholism. I haven't had a drink in 25 years.

Significant piece of art: Van Gogh's Starry Night. It takes me to a dreamy, magical place in my life when I was young and full of my own dreams.
