Robert Rauschenberg: Lifetime Achievement Award

By: Tracy Jones

2004 Men and Women of the Year

Meet our 2004 bright lights, the dynamic group of men and women who set a gold-medal standard along the Gulfshore. They range from one of the most famous living American artists and the newly appointed head of the Central Intelligence Agency to a social worker whose tireless efforts have improved the final days of many Southwest Floridians. You may already know their names and accomplishments; we asked them to share some of their private thoughts and experiences.

Since he burst onto the New York scene in the 1950s, Robert Rauschenberg, 78, has taken his place as a giant of contemporary art. His early three-dimensional pieces-not paintings, not sculptures-redefined conceptual art, but the perpetual innovator was soon revolutionizing printmaking and experimenting with performance art as well. His studio compound on Captiva-where he rode out Hurricane Charley-is secluded, but he's no recluse. He has nurtured Gulfshore artists and causes, and he established an endowment for the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Edison College in Fort Myers, where he's debuted works since 1980.

Birthplace: Port Arthur, Texas.

Guiding principle: To maintain my curiosity.

Most notable characteristic: Enthusiasm.

Most-admired trait: Generosity.

Heroes: The Wright Brothers, who taught a bicycle to fly.

Greatest achievement: Continuing to answer my calling.

Hoped-for achievement: More of the same.

Favorite Southwest Florida spot: Home.

People would be surprised to learn: That I was going to be a preacher until I was 14, and gave it up when I was told it was a sin to dance.

Perfect day: I'm not sure there are any.

What the Gulfshore needs: A saner response to politics.
