Samira Beckwith

By: Tracy Jones

2004 Men and Women of the Year

Samira Beckwith, 51, CEO of Lee County's Hope Hospice, became personally attuned to the needs of those with serious illnesses while undergoing three years of treatment for Hodgkin's Disease in the 1970s. She's used that insight and her training in social work to become a policy shaper in end-of-life-care issues, including testifying before Congress and serving on state and national boards.

Birthplace: Tyre, Lebanon.

Greatest achievement: Thousands of letters thanking me for the special kind of care we provide.

Hoped-for achievement: For the end of life to be as cherished as the beginning.

Hero: My mother. She set a wonderful example for me as a woman, mentor and friend.

Would trade places for a day with: Katie Couric. It would give me greater perspective and knowledge in my work, and asking the tough questions would be fun.

Most notable characteristic: My ability to believe that anything is possible. People ask where I get my strength and energy. I don't need more energy-just more time.

Perfect day: Working with people on life's final journey makes you realize every day is a gift and each moment counts. These perfect moments come in the simplest of times-laughing with my husband, talking to a friend or seeing a butterfly dance by my window.
