Scott Lutgert

By: Tracy Jones

2004 Men and Women of the Year

Circumstances may have led Scott Lutgert, 59, into the family business, but his drive and high standards have kept the Naples-based Lutgert Companies thriving during his tenure as CEO. Lutgert bested bigger, out-of-town companies by developing ultra-luxe high-rises along Naples' beachfront and is now betting on affluent buyers discovering such overlooked parts of Collier County as Everglades City. The chair of the 2005 Naples Winter Wine Festival, he is a member of Junior Achievement's Collier Business Leadership Hall of Fame.

Birthplace: Chicago.

Most notable characteristics: My laugh and my eyes.

One thing I'd change about myself: My vertical leap.

Greatest achievement: My family.

Still hoped-for achievement: More time to spend with my wife, Simone, and family.

Favorite Southwest Florida spot: My home.

Heroes: Nurses, teachers, policemen, firemen and volunteers-those who get up each day and tirelessly help others.

Most-admired trait: People who are responsible-they don't just talk, they do.

People would be surprised to learn: I don't sleep with my cell phone.

Perfect day: Each day is great. There is always something new and interesting, and always an opportunity to grow.

What the Gulfshore needs: Affordable health insurance, especially for all those who are working.
