Suzanne Chute

By: Tracy Jones

2004 Men and Women of the Year

The founder of the biannual Magnolia Ball, which has raised $1.2 million for the NCH Regional Cancer Institute, Suzanne Chute, 57, is known for organizational savvy, a can-do attitude and compassion. After battling cancer, she won't waste a minute of what she terms "a second chance." She supports medical research and environmental causes, including the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. She and her husband, Bob, are founding trustees of the Naples Winter Wine Festival, and advocates for underserved children.

Birthplace: Pittsburgh.

Guiding principle: I came from humble beginnings and was not raised by my parents or grandparents; overcoming many obstacles has given me inner strength and independence.

Most notable characteristic: Tenacious. Candid and direct to a fault-I'm working on that.

Most-admired trait: People who can make others laugh but not at the expense of anyone's feelings.

Greatest achievement: Helping my housekeeper become a U.S. citizen and finally, after eight years, bringing her children here to live with their parents.

Would trade places for a day with: I gain inspiration from many people, mentors as well as detractors, but the grass isn't always greener, so I wouldn't trade with anyone.

Favorite Southwest Florida spot: Living on our beautiful beach, I enjoy watching the constantly changing water and sky.

Hero: Those who give of themselves by donating blood, bone marrow and organs, often to strangers.

What the Gulfshore needs: To become more sensitive to protecting our water and environment by using less toxic pesticide and more organics.
