Happenings and highlights of the month

Art and benefit events, local sports, music and theater happenings, plus fun things to do with children this month on the Gulf Shore.

Art

Von Liebig Art Center. The Naples Art Association Member Juried Exhibition continues through June 11, along with a mixed media installation by Sandy Winters. June 25-Aug. 6: Carl Hertzberg Jr.: Paintings and Latch Hook Rugs, featuring works by the late self-taught Naples artist. Information: 597-1900.

Alliance for the Arts. 2D/3D Best in Show Winners: The Past Decade showcases past 2D/3D winners, through June 4. June 10-July 9: 2D/3D Annual All Florida Juried Exhibit, featuring artists from all over the state. Information: 939-2787.

Naples Museum of Art. Passion for Drawing: Poussin to Cezanne, featuring 100 French works from the Prat Collection, continues through June 12. Skin Tight: The Sensibility of the Flesh runs through July 31. Information: 597-1900.

Art League of Marco Island. Continuing through July 15: a Home & Garden-themed exhibition featuring members' art. Information: 394-4221.

Cape Coral Arts Studio. Guest Artists Invitational, a multimedia exhibit, is on view June 3-24, with an opening reception at 5 p.m. June 3. Information: 574-0802.

Shaw Gallery of Naples. The sculptures of L'Deane Trueblood are on view June 6-17. Also, the gallery joins other Fifth Avenue South art venues for Gallery Walk 6 to 9 p.m. June 5. Information: 261-7828.

Benefits

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Man and Woman of the Year Celebration. Society standouts are honored for their good works at this June 4 event at the Hilton Naples & Towers. Information: 992-5781.

Children

Kids' All-American Fishing Derby. Youngsters get a chance to reel 'em in during this annual event at Cape Coral Yacht Club, held on June 5. Information: 574-0806.

Aladdin. This musical retelling of the tale about a boy, a princess and a genie is set in ancient China and continues at the Broadway Palm Children's Theatre with performances June 1, 3, 5, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 17. Information: 278-4422.

Magic Carpet Concerts. Percussion is the focus of a small ensemble performance aimed at the younger set, onstage at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. June 4 at the Phil's Daniels Pavilion. Information: 597-1900.

Dora the Explorer Live: Dora's Pirate Adventure. A brand-new musical voyage with Nickelodeon's popular Dora and her friends, onstage 7 p.m. June 21 and 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. June 22 at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. Information: 481-4849.

Miscellaneous

Petrof's Primate Pavilion. Caribbean Gardens: The Zoo in Naples premieres its latest interpretive exhibit June 4, featuring a newly renovated island habitat with several varieties of lemurs and 1,000 species of orchids. Information: 262-5409.

Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce Taste of the Beach. A chance to sample good food from area restaurants, June 5 along Old San Carlos Boulevard. Information: 454-7500.

Evening on Fifth. Entertainment, shopping and more along Naples' Main Street, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. June 9. Information: 435-3742.

Music

SummerJazz on the Gulf. The summer series kicks off June 25 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club and continues in July, August and September. Performers TBA. Information: 261-2222.

Sports

Fort Myers Miracle. Baseball continues throughout the summer at Hammond Stadium in the Lee County Sports Complex, with the minor league team giving its all against the Sarasota Reds (June 3 and 4), the Dunedin Blue Jays (June 5-7), the Clearwater Threshers (June 14-16), the Lakeland Tigers (June 20-22) and the Tampa Yankees (June 29 and 30). Theater

Fourth Wall. Playwright A.R. Gurney tears down that wall as a stressed-out middle-aged wife re-creates her living room as a stage set. The Naples Players production continues through June 11 at the Sugden Theatre's Tobye Studio. Information: 263-7990.

Miss Saigon. The musical drama following the doomed love of a young GI and a Vietnamese girl continues through June 18 at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. Information: 278-4422.

The Sugar Bean Sisters. Nathan Sanders' comedy about two eccentric Florida sisters living in the swamp and their hopes for better times continues through June 19 at Florida Repertory Theatre. Information: 332-4488.

Rock 'n' Roll Beach Party. An affectionate look back at the tunes of a few decades ago, continuing through Aug. 13 at the Schoolhouse Theater on Sanibel. Information: 472-6868.

Play It Again, Sam. Woody Allen's comic homage to Humphrey Bogart, onstage in Sugden's Blackburn Hall June 8-25. Information: 263-7990.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Belle, her Beast, those singing kitchen utensils and more, onstage June 23-Aug. 13 at the Broadway Palm. Information: 278-4422.
