Places in their heartsBy: Community Advisory BoardWhere's a sure-fire spot to take visitors to in Southwest Florida? Our community advisory board weighs in. |

Sanibel is the home of the world's finest sunsets, with 15 miles of pristine shelling beaches. It's a mecca many people visit to enjoy the attractions of wildlife and outdoor activities.

My favorite things to share with my guests are the two extremes of Collier County. We first visit the Ritz-Carlton, Naples, for a wonderful dinner and the finest wines. Then before they leave, we visit the Rod & Gun Club in Everglades City to experience the past and educate them on our history. Nothing like fried frog legs and good old Key lime pie to balance out the Naples experience.

Three places are a must when I have out-of-town visitors. One, a sunset stroll on the beaches of Captiva Island. Nothing makes me feel closer to heaven. Second, tea at the Ritz-Carlton, Naples: divine pastries, strawberries, homemade whipped cream and champagne, served by a staff that makes you feel like royalty. And finally, dinner at Cru in the Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers, with fresh food, lush wine and great people-watching.

For 30 years I've gotten great feedback from taking people to Everglades City and the Everglades airboat rides, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and boating on Naples Bay. Although everyone enjoys our local restaurants, those three or four things are unique to our area and have been a uniform success, especially for those who aren't from Florida.

Each year I host an event for about 30 female broadcast journalists from around the country, fondly referred to as "Broadcast Babes at the Beach." I always plan different events around the area, but one event remains the same, because it is everyone's favorite: a cruise along the coast aboard Sweet Liberty, with a stop for lunch at Keewaydin Island.

I recommend visitors take time to visit the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary just north of Naples. With birds and other wildlife that you can view from the boardwalk, the natural aspect of the sanctuary is awesome. I understand the learning center is also pretty spectacular.

We keep bicycles for our guests, and in the mornings, we ride with them to Tony's Off Third in Old Naples. The patio overlooks this quaint town as it wakes up, and you can join friends or catch up on the news while eating a scrumptious pastry and sipping a latte. Lunch or dinner next door at Ridgway's captures the true Neapolitan spirit, with chef Tony Ridgway at the helm of the kitchen that produces the most variety and perfection that I have ever experienced in a menu.
Tucked away into the corners of the Naples City Dock are four little culinary treasures, each with its own ambiance. At Napoli on the Bay, the city's best-twirled, best-tasting pizza is served at plastic tables. For the authentic seafarer searching for the freshest raw bar, crispy fish and shrimp, and tropical drinks, there's The Dock restaurant overlooking the bay. In the evening, rustic and casual meet la vielle France, with two coveted French gems in this niche of the city. Bleu Provence offers haute-fusion Provencal cuisine with romantic ambiance, and Bamboo Café serves bona-fide countryside fare in a cozy atmosphere.

The Philharmonic Center for the Arts, affectionately called the Phil, shines among our area's many entertainment choices. Anticipating the opening of its 17th season, this cultural complex offers treats throughout the year for almost every aesthetic desire, taste and age group, including classical and popular music, award-winning Broadway musicals, opera, dance, lectures and more. Also at the center, the Naples Museum of Art delights the eye with its light-filled design. Myra Daniels, the Phil's chairwoman and CEO, speaks of the Philharmonic family. As a business, Yamron Jewelers is proud of its association with the Phil since its opening day. As a family, the Yamrons and our guests are grateful for the delights the Phil contributes so consistently to the quality of life in our community.

When out-of-town guests come in, the one place I don't want them to miss is the hotel where they're staying.
