Sports & Recreation

By: Staff

Discover Southwest Florida

When it comes to golf, the Gulfshore has few equals. According to the National Golf Foundation, the area has more golf holes per capita than anyplace else in the country, with more than 180 courses and more on the way. The luminaries of golfing and course design are all represented here, among them Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Rees Jones and Jack Nicklaus.

Not surprisingly, many of the area's recreational opportunities involve water; the Gulf and numerous rivers and lakes provide miles of it to explore by boat. Fishy types will find plenty worth casting a line for, including redfish, sea trout, snook and the mighty tarpon, along with deep-sea species such as grouper and cobia. For a leisurely exploration of the region's many smaller waterways, rent a kayak or canoe.

Outdoor tennis courts are found at various hotels and resorts, with still more at county and city parks. And for those who make a sport of spectating, Major League Baseball is a local rite of spring, with two Grapefruit League teams-the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins-in residence in Fort Myers March through April. And at Germain Arena in Estero, the ECHL Eastern Conference champion Everblades hit the ice October through April. Also at Germain: Arenafootball2's Firecats play to enthusiastic crowds April through July; and the Florida Flame, part of the NBA's development league, hoop it up November to March.
