The IT Guy

By: Jill Tyrer

Entrepreneur Manny Fernandez blazes technology trails.

If you're not in the business of computer software or information technology, you

can be forgiven for not knowing who Manny Fernandez is. But no matter what business you're in, you've probably benefited from his work-if only vicariously.

Fernandez, who fled Cuba with his family when he was 13 and grew up in Daytona, earned his electrical engineering degree from the University of Florida and was instrumental in the early 1980s in developing the first functional laptop computer. From 1990 to 1999 he served as president, CEO and chairman of Gartner Inc., the global IT research and consulting giant based in Stamford, Conn., and Fort Myers. He took that company public and grew revenues from $45 million to $1 billion. Fernandez, who is now close to 60, and his wife live on Sanibel Island, and he is managing director of SI Ventures, a venture-capital company that focuses on early-stage businesses.
