The Charity Register

if you are looking for a way to give back to the community, you'll find more than 275 Collier and Lee county nonprofit organizations listed here, each with opportunities for volunteers and patrons. The list itself contains brief descriptions of each organization, but it's important to remember that behind every listing are real life stories-stories of those who work to meet the needs of our community and of those who are served by that work.

In her role as a foster parent, Naples photographer and City Council member Penny Taylor knows some of these stories well. Taylor, who has a grown daughter, has most recently had two boys in her home, 17-year-old Jorge Orengo and a seven-year-old. Orengo is a recent Naples High School graduate who has been accepted at Ringling School of Art for the fall term. Taylor says it's been exciting to watch him blossom as an artist. "He's the real deal," she says.

Three years ago, Taylor was hired by the Naples Children and Education Foundation to photograph the children of Youth Haven, a 34-year-old emergency shelter for children whose families are in crisis. She was so moved by some of the children that she met (including the seven-year-old who now lives with her), that she immediately began the process of obtaining her foster
care license. She credits the Naples Children and Education Foundation for both the assignment that changed her life and for the millions of dollars they've given to area charities. She also sings the praises of those who do the day-in, day-out work of these agencies, including the Foster Care Council. What has impressed her most, she says, is "how much need there still is-and the extraordinary job that places like Youth Haven are doing."
