October

By: Rebecca Loveridge

The best things to do this month.

Those green eyes will stop you in your tracks; and this famous Steve McCurry portrait, Afghan Girl, is only one of 56 striking portraits-from the early 20th century to the last decade-that will be on display at In Focus: National Geographic Greatest Portraits. Created by the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and National Geographic magazine, the traveling exhibit will be shown at the Art League of Bonita Springs beginning Oct. 13. (239) 495-8989.

Acclaimed Spanish photographer Ángel Marcos captures the eerie, historic urban landscape of Cuba in Ángel Marcos en Cuba. The exhibition, co-organized by the Naples Museum of Art, was also shown in France and Spain. It opens Oct. 17. (239) 597-1900.

The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre opened in Fort Myers 14 years ago. Now it's celebrating another milestone, its 100th production, with the musical comedy The Full Monty, which opens Oct. 5. Will the stars really reveal it all? "Darn close," declares manager Susan Johnson. (239) 278-4422.

Get your tickets early.Emmy-nominated comedienne Kathy Griffin, star of the reality show My Life on the D-List, will dole out her hilarious celeb-bashing stand-up comedy at 8 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. (239) 481-4849 or www.bbmannpah.com.

Pour yourself a pint and get ready for some festliche Gemütlichkeit (festive comfort). Cape Coral's German-American Social Club will be hosting its 21st annual Oktoberfest bash the last two weekends of this month, with traditional delicacies, live music straight from Germany and lots of dancing. (239) 283-1400. In Naples, the Village on Venetian Bay will hold its annual Oktoberfest Oct. 19 from 5 to 9 p.m. (239) 261-6100.
