Despite the geological, artistic and market forces that shaped my diamond
engagement ring, it is the human force that propelled my grandfather to purchase
it and place it on the hand of my grandmother that makes me stare at it in
wonder. She wore it when she bore my father, while she cooked meals out of
nothing during the Great Depression, when she buried her husband, and when she
first held her grandchild. The ring has changed what I see when I look at my own
hands and consider what they might hold. Not bad for a hunk of carbon,
eh?
