January Highlights

By: Jennifer Freihofer

Get a glimpse of country legend Willie Nelson, whose career has spanned six decades and produced more than 200 albums, when he returns to the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall on Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. 481-4849 or www.bbmannpah.com.

In honor of one of its best known and most innovative residents, Thomas Edison, Fort Myers has hosted its three-week-long Edison Festival of Light for the past 70 years. There are activities for everyone, including a 5K race, junior events and a Grand Parade, Jan. 26 to Feb. 17. 334-2999 or www.edisonfestival.org.

The Joffrey Ballet is not your typical dance troupe. In the 1950s, the original dancers traveled across the country in a station wagon pulling a U-Haul trailer. Now considered one of the premier ballet companies in the United States, they showcase their unique repertoire, featuring music by the Beach Boys, Motown stars and Prince, at the Phil on Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. 597-1900 or www.thephil.org.

More than 200 artists from the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America and Europe bring their high-quality works (for viewing and for purchase) to The Promenade at Bonita Bay for the two-day Bonita Springs National Art Festival, hosted by the Art League of Bonita Springs, Jan. 12 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 495-8989.

With five 2006 Tony Awards, The Drowsy Chaperone brings to the Phil the chaotic life of a celebrity bride trying to find—and keep—her true love. It’s onstage Jan. 29 to Feb. 3. 597-1900 or www.thephil.org.
