Meet the Doctor
Heart to Heart
Heart disease has taken a devastating toll on Bonnie Spivey-Bates’
family. At only eight years old, she lost her father to a massive heart attack
when he was 50. Her five uncles on her father’s side died of heart attacks, as
did her brother, who also died at 50.
"I am bound and determined not to go that route," says
Spivey-Bates, who has taken preventive measures to stay healthy and is an active
volunteer with the local American Heart Association. But genetics had another
plan for her. In January, her carotid arteries were screened, revealing she had
abnormally high amounts of plaque for her age. It was then that her doctor
suggested she see Dr. John Diaz, medical director of the Cardiovascular Risk
Reduction Center at Anchor Health Centers in Naples.
The center is geared to diagnose a patient’s potential for
developing heart disease from every angle, including lifestyle habits and
high-tech CT scanning of artery blockage. Once the patient has been fully
analyzed, the 11 affiliated physicians and their support staff work to reduce
the risk factors through cardiology intervention, diet, stress management,
exercise and medication.
"Our program is really comprehensive," says Diaz. "If you had the
potential for heart disease, this center can evaluate you and treat you as well
as any university program or better."
Under Diaz’s care, Spivey-Bates has been able to control her risk
factors while improving her health at the same time. "[Dr. Diaz] is very
approachable," she says. "He’s out for everyone’s well-being."
Spivey-Bates now works with a nutritionist and a personal trainer
and goes to the gym three to four times a week. Her ultimate goal is to control
her risks through lifestyle choices, and to stop having to take medication,
which Diaz is closely monitoring. She also hopes she’s setting a good example
for her adult children who likely have inherited her family’s propensity for
risk of heart disease.
"I’m trying hard to keep my children healthy by telling them about
the risks," she says. "And now I have my first grandchild, and I watch her every
weekend. I want to be there for her."
Meet the Doctor
"It's Like She's Walked With Me"
When Barbara Courtney’s primary physician retired in the early
1990s, the doctor told Courtney, "There’s a new lady doctor in town, and I hear
she’s a real peach." Dr. Mary Yankaskas, an OB-GYN based in Cape Coral, was
exactly the kind of caring, hands-on physician Courtney would need for the
challenges ahead of her.
"My first child was stillborn," Courtney says. "After you’ve lost
one, the panic is horrible. When I was delivering the next baby, she said,
‘You’re keeping this baby from coming; you need to relax.’ And I trusted
her."
During the next eight years, Courtney had a total of four
children, three of whom Yankaskas delivered (Yankaskas has since focused her
practice entirely on gynecology.) "She has a quiet strength," Courtney says of
Yankaskas. "She gave me confidence for the rest of my children."
Yankaskas moved to Florida "for the weather" in 1992. This mother
of three chose obstetrics early on because, she says, "It’s a very happy field.
There’s nothing like the miracle of birth." Today, her cases range from teenage
adolescence to menopause. She says key topics for women’s health today include
heart disease education, menopausal health and breast cancer screenings. For
younger women, she emphasizes education about sexually transmitted diseases.
Like many of her long-term patients, Courtney continues to see
Yankaskas. "We’ve come to know each other very well," Yankaskas says. "When you
follow patients through the years, you see them through a lot of things."
There’s comfort in that consistency, Courtney says. "It’s almost
like she’s walked with me," she says. "I’ve really enjoyed being able to rest in
her expertise, and it’s a relationship where I feel equal."

Looking Good at Any Age
Juli Deniz wasn’t in need of a self-confidence overhaul when she decided to seek out a cosmetic surgeon. In fact, she says, "I felt real good about myself. I was always very diet-conscious, and I exercise regularly." But like many women her age, she was looking to reverse the effects of aging—particularly sun damage and "the pull of gravity," as she describes it.
With the guidance of her husband, a former Cleveland Clinic physician, Deniz set about finding the right surgeon. After conducting her research and attending seminars, she selected Dr. Andrew Turk of the Naples Cosmetic Surgery Center located in Physicians Regional Medical Center (formerly Cleveland Clinic Florida). Although she won’t disclose exactly which procedures she had done, Deniz says over the past four years under Turk’s care, she has "come to appreciate what an excellent decision I made."
An 11-year resident of Marco Island and an Ohio native, Deniz says residents in Southwest Florida demand quality healthcare. "There is a standard here that needs to be met," she says. "People here can go anywhere, and that causes the professionals to meet a higher standard."
Turk, who has practiced in Naples for seven years, says the typical cosmetic surgery patient is getting harder to define, especially those requesting filler procedures such as Botox, Restylane and Radiesse.
"The number of those patients has dramatically increased at all age levels and all income levels," says Turk. He credits that to the patients’ and physicians’ desire to not only reverse the signs of aging, but to prevent it as much as possible beforehand.
"I look at preventing aging in the same way as preventing diabetes," he says. "Here, in Southwest Florida, we have people living into their seventh and eighth decade of life, who are more active than those who are 30 years younger, and they want to look good."
For Deniz, the confidence boost she got from her improved appearance was a bonus. "It (cosmetic surgery) doesn’t change who you are inside," she says. "But you feel better and look better on the outside."
