“Let the Patients Tell Their Stories”
Boston native nanci breeze got to know many doctors at the former Cleveland Clinic in Naples (now Physicians Regional Medical Center) while her husband was battling terminal cancer.
After meeting Dr. Julie Southmayd, also from the Boston area, Breeze felt an immediate connection and chose her as her own primary care doctor.

Southmayd, who worked at Medical Surgical Specialists for the past two years, recently left to form Millennium Physician Group in Naples.  “(Southmayd) is the most professional medical person I’ve encountered in Naples,” Breeze says. “She’s smart, articulate, caring. She brings to us a level of medicine we don’t always see here. I’ve referred dozens and dozens of patients to her, all of whom feel the same way.”

While caring for her dying husband, Breeze battled depression, anxiety and stress, along with chronic back pain. “There were just a lot of issues she helped me work through so well,” Breeze says. “I can’t imagine her not being there as a support system for me.”

Southmayd remembers a professor at Dartmouth Medical School who taught her to ask the right questions and let the patients tell their stories. “A lot of times, you can figure out what’s going on without doing any testing,” she says.

In treating Breeze’s degenerative back problems, Southmayd asked if she was willing to try an acupuncturist. “It has saved me,” Breeze says. “Any referrals she gives are excellent. Her colleagues respect her a lot. She’s just that kind of person. She’s about holistic medicine, de-stressing. She’s just an amazing doctor.”

Southmayd became interested in alternative medicine and different approaches to healthcare while in Massachusetts. She has studied approaches to illness and wellness that focus on basic biochemistry and nutrition. “The point is to try to get to the root cause rather than just giving someone a pill,” Southmayd says. “I try now to incorporate that basic knowledge into my practice.”

“She Keeps Me on Track When I Get Down”
A fall changed thomas burtch’s life forever. the bonita springs man, a diabetic, didn’t properly digest his insulin after getting food poisoning. He passed out, breaking his neck and becoming a quadriplegic. However, his spinal cord wasn’t completely severed, allowing for the hope of some recovery. He spent several months in the hospital to learn basic movements before continuing therapy at home.
When Burtch started outpatient rehab, he met Dr. Debra Roggow of Rehabilitation Consultants in Fort Myers, a doctor of osteopathic medicine specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. “She became the person who steers me through it, lines me up with medication and treatment,” he says.
Roggow has been working in Fort Myers for 16 years, mostly helping patients with brain or spinal cord injuries, strokes and multiple sclerosis, but also seeing patients after hip and knee replacements. “My focus is on neurological problems and pain,” she says. While Roggow spends a few weeks treating orthopedic patients and a few months with stroke cases, she cares long-term for people with chronic pain or paralysis, such as Burtch. She treated his muscle spasms and coordinated his outpatient care. She also helped him go through the grieving process.
“I felt sorry for myself for a while. In the initial stages, I wished I had died. Another doctor told me he didn’t think I’d ever walk again,” Burtch says. “(Roggow) is one of the most positive people I’ve ever run into. She helps to keep me on track when I get down. Some doctors just write prescriptions, and off you go. She’s more than that. She gets inside your head to try to understand how you feel about your situation.”
Burtch can now feed himself and walk 900 feet with a walker. “If you’ve got the right team to help you do that, you don’t know what you can’t accomplish,” he says. “I don’t know if I’m going to make a full return, but I’ve really got to be grateful for the progress I’ve been able to make at this point—and I’m going to make some more.”

Carol and aldo magistrelli of naples were impressed when a friend had plastic surgery by Dr. Stanley P. Gulin. So impressed, in fact, that Carol decided to go to Gulin for a facelift and eyelift. Her husband followed suit soon after with a facelift and brow lift.
“I really didn’t consider anyone else because of my friend’s recommendation,” Carol says. “And I had seen how she looked—very natural. I wasn’t trying to look years and years younger. I was trying to look my best for what my age was.”
Aldo says his wife’s surgery spurred him on. “Before the operation, we looked like husband and wife,” he says. “After the operation, I looked like her father. I said, ‘This isn’t going to fly.’”
Gulin, who’s been in practice for 25 years, relocated to Naples from Connecticut in 2002 and shares office space with Skin Care of Naples. He specializes in facial rejuvenation, breast surgery and body contouring, including correcting other doctors’ surgeries in his on-site operating room. About 80 percent of his patients are women, ages 30 to 75.
He says those who are referred by patients make the best patients. “They know you. They trust you. They’ve seen your work,” he says.
The Magistrellis say Gulin is more than a surgeon. They describe him as an artist. “He studies your face and rebuilds it to the way he thinks it should look,” Aldo says. “You tell him what you want him to do—or not do—and he’ll listen.”
 Gulin says he respects the contours of the face. “You’re sculpting it. You’re not just pulling it,” he says. “It’s a three-dimensional rejuvenation. It’s not just a matter of stretching out wrinkles, but filling out gaunt areas. The trend is to look good, healthy and refreshed—but not artificial. That’s not what people in Naples are looking for.”
Carol says people who knew her before are cautious about asking if she’s had cosmetic surgery. “I’m so pleased that I don’t hesitate to tell people, ‘Yes, I’ve had work done.’”
