Creative Spirit: Dick Geary

Though Dick Geary, of Naples' award-winning Geary Design, shares his interior and furniture design expertise with students at the University of Florida and professionals at design conferences, he stresses, "In this field, your work should speak for you." His work does just that, in language that's clean, uncluttered and easy to live with. His modern furniture is on display at the prestigious Forecast showroom in the Miami Design District; and his residential projects keep him jetting off to far-flung locales in the U.S., Europe and Mexico. Who are your design heroes? Eileen Gray; Antonio Citterio. People who design with simplicity and clarity; their stuff doesn't go out of style. What inspires you? My clients. You can learn as much from them as they can from you. What should happen to the look of this region? They could design buildings that actually respond to this climate. [Today's] houses are like big SUVs; they suck up resources. What can't you live without? Inventing-that gets me up in the morning. Not an object, because objects pass through. We're all just custodians, anyway. What makes you happy? Getting up and doing design-it's really that easy.
