The Charity Register 2011
It’s safe to say that the arts are under attack. (And let’s not kid ourselves, the classical arts are especially, umm, delicate.) Not only are they in a battle for our attention versus modern art forms (television, video games, YouTube videos of adorable cats, etc.), but they’re also straining for funding during a period when money tends to be earmarked for more “practical” pursuits. It’s the truth of our times.
If nonprofit organizations such as Gulfshore Ballet (www.gulfshoreballet.org) in Fort Myers don’t survive, something as beautiful as ballet could become a museum exhibit, as relevant to tomorrow’s youth as woolly mammoths and the dodo. We’re fortunate there’s still a passion and a drive in the taut, flat bellies of Gulfshore Ballet co-founders Melinda Roy and her husband, Roberto Munoz.
“We just try to make it affordable—but times are a little rough,” says Roy. “We cannot function on tuition alone. We rely heavily on donations and grants—and we haven’t gotten a single grant we’ve applied for in the last two years.”
Yikes. And although at any time during the season their school can echo with the patter of hundreds of little feet, we need to realize that this is not group daycare with pointe shoes. Roy, a former principal ballerina for the New York City Ballet, and Munoz, the ballet master of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, formed Gulfshore Ballet in 2000, bringing with them an opportunity for locals of all ages to train with world-class professionals.
In fact, one of their former scholarship students, Peter Walker of Fort Myers, arrived as a nine-year-old tap dancer and, five years later, was accepted to the School of American Ballet, the official training academy of the New York City Ballet. Pretty cool, huh? This year, at age 18, Walker was awarded the prestigious Mae L. Wien Award of Excellence from the school and, best of all, was offered a full-time position with the NYCB.
“I taught him his first pirouette,” says Roy, laughing.
“Melinda and Roberto have such a wealth of knowledge,” says Walker. “There is so much individual attention … Taking a class there really is a great privilege.”
There are hundreds of other organizations just as deserving as Gulfshore Ballet. The groups represented in the following pages range from those who feed the hungry to groups who provide end-of-life care. They help men and women, children and the elderly, pets and the arts. —Michael Korb
