Rain Didn’t Dampen Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest

The spotlight was on Lee County last weekend for amazing culinary creations. The Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest kicked off the evening of Friday, Feb. 26 with elegant vintner dinners. Then on Saturday, some of Southwest Florida’s top restaurants and chefs donated their services and time under the big top at Miromar Lakes Beach Club. Their creations...

Cruü's Colorado buffalo.

Crü’s Shannon Yates brought forth double delights with Colorado buffalo or sushi grade tuna, served in bamboo cones. Roy’s Chef Ryan Leto made an authentic Japanese Yellowtail Poke with Hawaiian pink salt, soy sauce and chilis.

Angelina's butternut squash ravioli.

Angelina’s Chef Nick Costanzo’s delicate butternut squash ravioli with citrus and tomato-flavored butter was topped with toasted candied almonds.

Tarpon Bay's Chef Vincent Savignano.

Tarpon Bay’s Chef Vincent Savignano was a hit with banana leaf-wrapped grouper served with jasmine rice and a choice of six salsas.

Bayfront Bistro's Chef Marin B. Avilez, Vanessa Sanchez and Mike Wilke.

Bayfront Bistro’s Chef Marbin B. Avilez presented rich Kobe beef with sweet potato galette and a chocolate demiglace with a touch of reduced balsamic vinegar. The Capital Grille’s chefs had long lines for their Kona coffee-crusted tenderloin, and lobster mac ’n cheese.

Tom Johnson pours Silver Oak.

Mike Honig brought his daughter and rare bottles from Honig Winery’s limited 200-case Bartellucci vineyard pressing, honoring the Bartellucci farming family and their vineyard. The delicious Catena Alta 2006 Chardonnay and the Twomey Sauvignon Blanc 2008 were two of the guests’ top white wine choices. Silver Oak’s Napa Valley and Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignons were sought after.

Rik Steere with Maria and Nancy Ponzi.

Nancy and Dick Ponzi, the first to grow pinot noir in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, are celebrating Ponzi Vineyard’s 40th birthday this year, completing a four-story, gravity-fed winery, and welcoming their family’s third generation into winemaking.

French Bread Oven's Andre Gratesol.

French Bread Oven’s Andre Gratesol’s amazing white chocolate brioche had people coming back for seconds. He says it’s great with espresso!

Norman Love and Keegan Gerhard's chocolate panini.

Norman Love and Keegan Gerhard topped it all off with chocolate panini with pineapple and aged rum cream, raspberry and vanilla crème brûlée, and white and dark chocolate mousse cones!

The auction crowd.

The net result? The energetic crowd at the Wine and Food Fest and Auction raised $900,000—a new record— to directly help the children of Southwest Florida. Well done!

Let’s broaden our choices of great Southwest Florida restaurants together. Post your hints and experiences below or e-mail me at Diningscene@live.com.
