The Gulf Coast Big Band will present a concert in the park on Sunday, Jan. 27 at the Cambier Park Bandshell at 2 p.m. This performance will feature tunes made famous by Dizzy Gillespie, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, and many other great jazz composers since the 1940s. Vocalist Susie Hulcher, a singer with extremely diverse musical influences - ranging from Gershwin to Ella Fitzgerald - will take the stage as well.
The Gulf Coast Big Band is under the direction of renowned jazz trumpeter, Dan Miller. Originally from Chicago, Miller has lived and worked in New York City since 1991. He spent 11 years as a member of the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra, traveling the world and recording numerous albums and television specials. Miller has also toured internationally and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Tom Jones, and Woody Herman. He performed with The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, The Lionel Hampton Orchestra, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Curtis Fuller, Branford Marsalis, Randy Brecker, Frank Foster, Jon Hendricks, George Coleman, David "Fathead" Newman, Jack McDuff, and Johnny McGriff. Miller has been designated a Yamaha Clinician and Performing Artist for his excellence in music.
The Gulf Coast Big Band is a non-profit organization that has been performing big band and jazz music in the Naples area for over twenty years. Concerts are free-of-charge with donations appreciated. All donations are earmarked for the Gulf Coast Big Band’s scholarship program. Since its inception, the Band has awarded over $80,000 in scholarships to local high school students to attend summer music camps.
