Insider's Guide: Sports & Recreation

It may be known for superior golf, but Southwest Florida also boasts top-notch tennis, water sports and more.

“I think it’s safe to say that most visiting golfers fantasize about living on one of the 150 courses (most of them private) that sprinkle our coastline from Marco to Sanibel islands. If you’re one of them, it may take several vacations before you buy a home here. In the meantime, here are some tips for getting in some great golf during your stay.

• Some golf resorts offer non-guest play. For example, Greg Norman’s Tiburon at the Ritz-Carlton, Golf Resort has a member for a day program.

• Get a spectator/play ticket at one of the major tournaments held here, such as The Ace Group Classic’s Ultimate Golf Experience.

• Many golf community developers keep their courses open to the public until the official turnover to the owners. Several such communities in Naples and Fort Myers are under development in 2014.

• South Florida PGA’s GolfPass gets players onto many private courses between May and October.

• Check out two of my favorite public courses: the Mustang and Flamingo at Lely Resort Golf & Country Club. They’re as beautiful, challenging and enjoyable as any private course in the region.”
