“Right away he eased my mind.”
Nine years ago, inez galon’s doctor made an appointment for her to see Dr. Kendall Wise.
“Right away he eased my mind,” Galon says of the urologist. “He told me what I had and what we would be doing for the rest of my life.”
Wise and Galon created a partnership for her care that could last decades, provided Galon doesn’t leave Naples, because Wise isn’t going anywhere.
Wise is proud to be a Neapolitan. His high school diploma from Naples High gets the same prominence on his office wall as his undergraduate degree from the University of Mississippi, his medical degree from Vanderbilt and his residency certificate from Duke. After leaving Duke in 1988, he set up shop back in his hometown.
Wise sees about 100 patients a week and each of them gets the same level of care, because he knows what might seem routine to him is a big deal to the patient.
“People who come for a doctor’s visit see a doctor every time; that’s a little different than some of the other offices,” he says. Wise guarantees an open line of communication with his patients. His team will always find an answer for your questions, says Galon.
While his bedside manner might recall a bygone era, Wise’s methods include the most cutting-edge surgery technology, such as the da Vinci robot, in his practice. Wise assists as another surgeon works the robot to do surgeries that used to require large incisions. “(The robotic surgeon’s) movements are electronically transmitted to a robot, and the robotic arms actually go through very small incisions inside the patient,” Wise says.
And if compassionate care isn’t enough, Galon says a fringe benefit is an improvement in her golf game. “I always play better after I see him,” she says.
Although Wise doesn’t guarantee this outcome for everyone, he says he always tries to be on the side of his patients. Galon couldn’t agree more.

“I’ve never had a bad experience.”
Unlike some doctor-patient relationships that begin and end with the treatment of a specific ailment, the link between a dermatologist and her patient is often an ongoing one. Marianne Durbin first visited Dr. Cynthia Strohmeyer more than 15 years ago for routine dermatologic care. Now 66, Durbin has progressed to more intensive treatments to boost collagen growth and soften the inevitable lines around her eyes.
Three years ago, under the care of Strohmeyer, she opted for an injectable filler called Sculptra, which, unlike other fillers that last only a few months to a year, she is still seeing benefits from. She credits it with re-stimulating the collagen in her face, plumping wrinkles and smoothing lines, a procedure that’s done right in Strohmeyer’s office. “It’s fairly simple, and it’s a lot better than a facelift,” Durbin says.
Sculptra, Botox, Restylane and their ilk are just one part of Strohmeyer’s arsenal, which includes everything from topical treatments to sunscreens to chemical or laser peels. And while she specializes in cosmetic dermatology, the Duke University graduate also handles skin cancer screenings and excisions—all while maintaining a relatable, compassionate interaction with her patients.
“I’ve never had a bad experience,” says Durbin, who has referred many friends to Strohmeyer. “You come in to her office, and everyone is so friendly. She’s good at what she does, and she won’t do anything she doesn’t think is right. She just feels like family.”
It’s no coincidence. Being compassionate is hugely important to Stroh-meyer, as well. “It’s not just about keeping up to date with new products; it’s deciphering that information so I can let my patients know what’s worth spending their money on or not. “It’s just a miracle.”
Imagine that your hand doesn’t work. You can’t write, do simple house chores or even feed yourself. Such was Nancy Owen’s life before meeting orthopedic surgeon Dr. Patrick Leach.
Patients who find themselves in Leach’s Fort Myers office usually have the toughest cases, fractures beyond what a normal orthopedist sees. A majority of Leach’s work comes from cases referred to him by trauma doctors from Lee Memorial, but he also treats patients who are referrals.
Owen fractured her humerus when she tripped over a paint can and fell. The fracture hadn’t healed after her first surgery three months earlier. She showed signs of nerve damage.
Even Leach was skeptical he could bring back the movement Owen lost. After seeing the extent of the damage, he only gave her a 10 to 20 percent chance of ever using her hand again. But just 10 months after surgery, Owen regained most of her wrist mobility back and the fracture healed. Now, Owen can do most of the things she found impossible prior to surgery.
“It’s just a miracle,” Owen says. “He repaired the nerve that gives me even a little bit of movement in my wrist.”
Leach loves getting good results like Owen’s case. He and his staff pride themselves on providing patients with the highest level of expertise. “The main thing that I do is fractures of the pelvis and the hip socket part of the pelvis,” Leach says. “To my knowledge there isn’t anyone else who is doing that between Tampa and Miami.”
And he’s quick to adapt his practice to the latest trends. Right now, he’s refining new techniques to reduce the amount of exposure to radiation a patient undergoes. With the use of new software, patients only need to have a few X-rays taken. This saves them from unnecessary radiation.
Everything Leach does is to give his patients better quality of life, whether it’s a simple exam or helping make difficult decisions about amputation or complex surgery. “We’re going to provide them with the best solution there is—that’s not always the outcome they’re looking for, but it’s the best solution available,” he says. —Kristie Aronow
