He’s Got a Fragrance, Too
David yurman’s collections of fine jewelry and timepieces for women and men are among the most distinctive in the luxury market today. His original silver and gold cable design, which has been a cornerstone of his collections since he launched his line in 1980, has been interpreted into many beautiful styles since then. Everything from bracelets to necklaces to rings—bedecked with glittering gemstones—bears the imprimatur of David Yurman’s classic design sensibility.
It’s not surprising that Yurman studied art and briefly worked as a sculptor before creating his own jewelry empire with a mission “to fuse art, fashion and fine jewelry.” Yurman, who is also an ardent philanthropist, has also gained a reputation for his stunning, moody advertisements that have featured supermodels Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Amber Valletta. We caught up with the designer on the eve of his trip to Saks at Waterside Shops (he will be there on Dec. 8) to get his take on timeless style and the emotional appeal of jewelry.
You have many different looks in your jewelry collections. What’s your basic design philosophy?
The David Yurman design ideals are those of classicism, structure, sculptural form and the dynamic between the masculine and the feminine.
Who is the David Yurman customer?
The David Yurman woman and man are modern and unique, but also very much arbiters of tradition and quality. They are smart and discerning and see jewelry as a means of personal expression.
Why did you decide to design timepieces? How does that differ from designing jewelry?
Our clients turn to us not only for jewelry but also for a classic watch they can mix and match with their favorite jewelry pieces.
Timepiece design is very different from jewelry design. The technical complexity that creates the framework within a watch is something we have been excited to explore. David Yurman SA in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, was established as a result of our commitment to the traditions and craftsmanship of fine Swiss watchmaking. Our timepiece business was reborn in 2009 with the introduction of The Classic—our first round watch for men—and was followed by a ladies’ edition in 2010.
What are the key jewelry pieces every woman needs in her wardrobe?
Every woman should wear what she loves best. We have many different pieces that can be layered according to the woman. You can also go with just one statement piece.
Why did you choose to have bridal and eyewear collections?
Bridal jewelry is arguably the most meaningful jewelry purchase of a lifetime. I’m a romantic, and the inspiration for the bridal collection stemmed from my strong relationship with my wife, Sybil. We wanted to create a dynamic collection embodying our classic brand aesthetic. Eyewear is another form of adornment. We wanted to fuse eyewear with jewelry into one cohesive product.
You also have a fragrance. How did you go about developing that?
Scent is representative of personal style, and Sybil and I were intrigued to explore our senses and feed our passion for working with incredible natural materials.
What has been your most successful business strategy in this challenging economic climate?
What has kept the David Yurman business the strongest is our dedication to the craft and technique of jewelry design. We also have a firm commitment to personalized attention for our clients. And we shall always fulfill our clients’ needs and surpass their expectations in terms of diversity in design.
