Person of Inetrest

The Best Wine I Ever Had?
A $2 Bottle in Tuscany

Residence: South Fort Myers with his wife, Debi

Sharing his passion: He teaches wine seminars at Austin’s Wine Cellar in Fort Myers. This is his first year as wine director for the Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest. The vintner dinners are Friday, Feb. 27, and the grand tasting and auction are Saturday, Feb. 28, at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club.

Wine fest duties: Greenfield coordinates wine selection with chefs, winemakers and distributors. “I have to put together a master list so there’s good representation of major types and regions. It’s a dangerous position because everybody’s tastes are so different. It’s an opportunity for me to share what I like with a lot of people.”

Day job: President of Greenfield Advertising Group in Fort Myers. He previously taught junior college English, humanities and theater before traveling to Tel Aviv to dub films from Hebrew into English for the Israeli film industry.

Literary roots: He co-authored the book Maverick about Dennis J. Marvicsin’s experiences as a Vietnam helicopter gunship pilot. Greenfield wrote a wine book yet to be published and writes blogs at swflwinefest.org.

Beer convert: He was a beer drinker until a wine salesman introduced him to sauvignon blanc. “I started buying by the case, not by the bottle. I started reading wine encyclopedias from front to back.”

(Nearly) fully loaded: He built his new home with a refrigerated wine cellar, which is 300 bottles shy of its 1,400-bottle capacity.

Favorite wine: An unlabeled bottle a man made in his garage in Tuscany that Greenfield and his wife drank while watching the sunset. “It was the best bottle of wine I ever had, and it cost $2. It’s who you’re with and where you are.”
