Shopportunities: Layered for Fall

How to get a hot look suited for cooler autumn mornings and evenings

Dear Cheryl,

I love the idea of layering an outfit. I want to look effortlessly on-trend—how can I avoid looking bulky and bundled up?

Layering is certainly a great way to dress for fall in Florida.
Start off by looking at what you already have in your closet. If you have a dress that looks too summery on its own but can add a shirt or long-sleeved cotton tee (or both) underneath, you can transform it into the perfect fall outfit.

One of the key elements to getting the layered look right is to play with proportions. Team a cropped sweater with a longer top in a finer fabric, add a pair of slim-fitting pants, and try a fourth layer with a long-line coat or jacket. Aim for the hemlines to hit several inches below each other, to create a flattering, elongating effect. Another element to play with is texture—try pairing fine, silky fabrics with nubby, bouclé textures or faux fur. Just be careful about putting a heavy fabric over an even heavier one. By layering different weights and fabrics, you’ll maintain a sleek line without adding bulk. Another easy way to look effortlessly elegant in your layers is to stick to a neutral or tone-on-tone color palette.
