Ahead of The Curve

Freshening Up Your Wardrobe

Spring has sprung, and with it arrives the promise of everything exciting and fresh—for your wardrobe, that is. Whether you’re updating everything or just trying a trend, here’s what you’ll need to dress for success.

Flower power We know what April showers are said to bring, so now’s the time to burst into bloom. With petal patterns that range from big and bold to small and subtle, fashion is coming up floral. Try Valentino’s Printemps tote from Marissa Collections in Naples, a raspberry-colored confection that’s sure to turn countless thumbs green with envy. $3,495, Marissa Collections, 1167 Third Street S., Naples.

It’s a cinch If you’ve lamented the southward migration of fashion’s waistline, rejoice. A high-and-tidy waist is returning to women’s apparel, says Judy Starnes, owner of private Fort Myers boutique Janet Marie Studios.

Add a proper belt to create contour and definition. Starnes suggests an elastic cinch belt, a no-fail favorite. Janet Marie Studios, 1400 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers.

Get printed The little black dress belongs in every fashionista’s retinue, but it’s time to give it a bit of company. Jennifer Williams, owner of contemporary Fort Myers clothing shop Jennifer’s, recommends keeping current with a graphic print knit dress, such as those by designer Only Hearts. Whether you prefer a geometric, animal or floral print, these dresses are fun and flirty, but also a cool fit for Florida’s warm climate. $150 to $275, Jennifer’s, 13451 McGregor Blvd., Suite 1, Fort Myers.

Chain gang Sometimes a little sparkle is sufficient. Other times, it’s good to go for the gusto, as with the Laia necklace, a dazzling double sterling silver chain by international jewelry designer Erika Peña, who is headquartered in Fort Myers. Flowing, fluid and finished with bright glass beads, the Laia is versatile enough to inspire tried-and-true outfits, but will also complement any of this season’s many new styles. $178, www.erikapena.com.

Bold shoulder It’s the shape that has been seen on everyone from runway models to first lady Michelle Obama. The asymmetrical cut of a one-shouldered top or dress, such as an ivory ruffle top by Robert Rodriguez, available at Nordstrom, is flattering and easy to wear. Sexy and dramatic, it’s an evolution of the strapless gown that gives us proof of intelligent fashion design. $275, Nordstrom, Waterside Shops, 5489 Tamiami Trail N., Naples.

How bazaar Bohemian chic is back, and it’s infused with decorative accents and ethnic influences. Go global with one of the artisanal cardigans or shawls by M Missoni at Saks Fifth Avenue, boldly patterned pieces that will enhance any ensemble with a kaleidoscope of exotic colors. $495-$795, Saks Fifth Avenue, Waterside Shops, 5395 Tamiami Trail N., Naples.

Take stock If your morning routine includes standing at your closet announcing you have nothing to wear, you might be right. The first step to fresh fashion might not be at the boutique but at your home, where Naples wardrobe stylist Barbara King advises taking an inventory of what you already have and what you still need. Then, armed with that information, start shopping—perhaps for that one perfect piece, King says. www.barbarakingstyling.com.
