The Risk Pays Off

My bad. i got so excited last month about the Southwest Florida premiere of Wicked that I completely forgot to mention an adventurous art exhibition worthy of your time. Fortunately for all of us, Tammra Sigler’s Take A Risk show continues at the Sweet Art Gallery in north Naples through the end of this month, so there’s still plenty of time to check it out.

Having opened appropriately on Friday the 13th, the show features Sigler’s latest work—a series of monoprints where she dared herself to try something new. "I had been doing flowers for a while and knew I didn’t want to do more of that," she says. "But I didn’t know what I wanted to do. So I started to think, what about my prints is essential? One feature is that they are very pristine, fresh and clean.
So I thought, OK, why don’t I do dirty things?"

Sigler grabbed some printing paper, crayons and pencils and put on some Lou Reed music. She began marking up the paper, reacting to the rhythms and sticking with one song over and over until she felt a sense of completion. Only then did she proceed to adding paint and making a print. The next day she followed the same method, working to the music of Laurie Anderson.

The results, bearing the titles of the songs that inspired them, are abstract works full of emotion, squiggles, suggestions and surprises. Reed’s Sunday Morning manages to evoke a breakfast of eggs and bacon, helped along by a crossword puzzle in one corner.

To get into Sigler’s playful spirit, stop by Take a Risk. It just might leave you wanting to blast the music on the way home.
