What I’m drinking

The PrisonerTwo years ago, when a customer inquired about a wine called The Prisoner, I replied, “Never heard of it.” Fast forward to 2011—it is one of my best sellers. Produced by a Napa winemaker with the quirky name of Orin Swift, The Prisoner is an intriguing red blend, dominated by the Zinfandel grape. Orin makes three other proprietary reds, Abstract, Machete and Papillon, all different blends with unique and seductive flavor profiles. These wines retail in the $40- to $60-range and are available at Tony’s Off Third. Wait, I almost forgot to mention his solo white, Veladora, a complex, fruit-forward Sauvignon Blanc ($29). Orin generously donates 100 percent of the profits from this wine to Puertas Abiertas, a California coalition that provides free medical services to vineyard laborers and their families.
