Your guide to great causes along the Gulfshore.

BY September 4, 2013
Your guide to great causes along the Gulfshore.

It’s been seven years since Jeremy Cantrell has seen his children. After a bitter divorce in 2006, his ex-wife severed all contact between them. The split from his family drove Cantrell into a deep, downward spiral.

Originally from Nashville, Tenn., Cantrell, 43, had been a long-time Westinghouse employee and once owned a telecommunications company. But those careers slipped away when Cantrell turned to drugs for consolation.

“It got to the point where I was losing my mind as a result of it,” he says, later adding: “It just did a fantastic job at numbing pain.”

Cantrell found a job delivering pizzas, but when his car broke down, he was fired. Eventually, he began selling narcotics. Drugs were no longer just an antidote to his depression.

Cocaine became his life.

With homelessness looming, Cantrell fled to family in Naples for support. He found St. Matthew’s House.

A short stint in the organization’s shelter prompted the weighty choice to enter Justin’s Place, a residential recovery program for those with life-controlling issues (often substance abuse).

Justin’s Place is just one hope St. Matthew’s House, a Naples-based nonprofit, provides to those in need. Since its founding in 1987, St. Matthew’s has stretched considerably, offering a soup kitchen, food pantry and even a catering company.

“About 1,500 people are admitted to one of our programs each year, and we serve about another 12,000 through direct assistance,” says the Rev. Vann Ellison, St. Matthew’s president and CEO.

More than 7,000 people annually contribute almost half of the charity’s $6 million budget. By next year, Ellison says he aims for the organization to reach 70 percent self-sufficiency—a goal aided by notable expansion.

St. Matthew’s just opened its fifth thrift store. In the works are plans for an independent women’s house for Justin’s Place and a daytime diner, which will employ Justin’s Place participants.

“We’re going to roll out a capital campaign in the fall or next year that will allow us to build those facilities,” Ellison says.

His excitement has little to do with the bottom line.

“For me the greatest paycheck is really seeing a life change,” he says. “In this area, we don’t go anywhere where I don’t see somebody who’s been impacted by what we do.”

Cantrell shares the same zest for the charity he says healed him and taught him accountability.

“The impact may seem small, but if you take one person and help them become a productive member of this community again, it’s a ripple effect,” he says.

One year after his shelter stay, Cantrell is a Justin’s Place graduate—and sober. He wears a crisp suit and tie to his claims office job. Off the clock, he’s cooking for his roommates at the St. Matthew’s transitional apartments, attending church functions and testifying before incoming men at Justin’s Place.

But he isn’t quite finished. Soon, he starts surgical technician training. Long-term, he aspires to create his own organization like St. Matthew’s. Ultimately, he envisions a life back in Nashville, starting with a much-awaited reunion with his children.

“I’m at a point now where I’m simply just grateful for the time I got to spend with them,” Cantrell says. “If I never get to see them again, the time that I had has made my life.”
