Dear Cheryl: Adding Edge to the Pastels

Re-think pastels this spring.

Some of this season’s colors are very pretty, but I’ve never worn pastels before. How do I make them work? — Julia K., Naples

Although it’s not exactly trendsetting to see candy colors for spring fashion, many design houses sent a parade of pastel down their runways at their spring/summer shows. Before visions of Easter egg color palettes fill your thoughts, don’t worry—this season’s gelato hues won’t give you sugar overload. Designers have sharpened up the sweetness of sorbet shades with edgy and quirky details that are easy to replicate: Try metallic accessories, ankle booties or an oversize straw sunhat. Or, pair your pastel with another favorite spring trend, the trench coat. Tip: Lavender is the season’s “It” color. Layer it with other pastels for a truly on-trend look, but make sure to keep the silhouette clean, fresh and simple so as not to look like an ice cream sundae with all the toppings.
