Suggested New Year's resolution: Start the day off right

BY January 6, 2012

This year many of us have undoubtedly have sworn oaths to get in shape and become healthier. While we are with you a 100 percent on those promises, might we suggest starting with something small, like eating breakfast every morning.

It’s a fact that eating breakfast will help to jump start metabolism and improve cognitive function. That means losing weight more easily and performing better at work. If you think about it, you’ve just fasted for approximately eight hours; you’re going to need to refuel your engines in order to perform your best. Most experts recommend breakfasts that are rich in protein. Here are a couple ways to get a protein rich breakfast without pulling out a skillet every morning.

·        Boil eggs the night before. Eating two hard-boiled eggs and a serving (or two) of fruit is an easy way to fit the breakfast meal into your everyday routine.

·        Make yourself a delicious protein shake (see recipe below); you’ll be getting all your morning nutrients in a single glass.

·        Cereal is a classic for a reason, but if you really want to see your cereal work for you, buy a brand that is fortified in nutrients not just a sugar supplement. (i.e. Total, Wheaties, Multigrain Cheerios)

·        If you want to start small, try yogurt and a handful of nuts.

Morning smoothie

6 ounces low-fat vanilla yogurt

1 scoop whey protein powder

1/2 cup berries (To simplify things, use frozen berries. You can find a bag at any supermarket.)

A handful of spinach or kale (This is optional, but you won’t be able to taste it. The nutrients you gain definitely outweigh any misgiving you may have about eating green things in the morning.)

Throw all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. It’s that easy.
