Design Trend: Punk Meets Classics

For a sophisticated but slightly bad-boy look, try adding furniture with nail-head accents.

BY March 20, 2014

Some of us (who shall remain nameless) may have embraced the punk trend the first-go round. Safety pins as earrings, leather spiked chokers and other apparel meant to shock the so-called establishment. Punk’s back but it’s been sedated. 2014’s version is more sophisticated and restrained in fashion and furniture, the latter captured in black leather and nail detailing. C.R. Laine’s appropriately named Gotham chair’s shown in cowboy coal leather is accented with alternating nickel and pewter nails, a look that “feels more polished than rough,” according to the company’s Holly Blalock. $2,275, crlaine.com for locations. Century Furniture also takes fashion’s “tough girl look” for a spin, adding edge in small doses like its Phoenix bench, shown with embossed leather and square nail-head accents.
