Sad news in today’s Naples Daily News: Southwest Florida’s best barbecue restaurant, The Brown Bag, is closing today after nearly 30 years in Golden Gate City. Thankfully, the place is closing because the owner wants to retire and his kids no longer want to be part of the business and not because of financial difficulties.
Still, one can’t help but shed a foodie tear for the takeout place. They really did have the best ribs and barbecue chicken in Southwest Florida, the only thing that came close to the barbecue of my youth in Southern Missouri.
There’s at least one place ready to take up the mantle of the best in our area—Black Eyed Pig on Shirley Street in Naples. But it still has a ways to go before reaching the level of continued excellence The Brown Bag achieved for the past 28 years.
